Movement in the lower abdomen and pelvis is referred to as "apana"; it governs elimination within the reproductive, digestive, and urinary systems. Come release congestion, strain, and imbalances in the lower abdomen to increase mobility. Includes twists, inversions, supine poses, supported backbends, and pranayama. Discussion and asana.

Samana, the furnace for digestive function and absorption, is present in the upper abdomen and relates to digestive fire and the third chakra. Release holding in the midtrunk region, including the stomach and small intestine, caused by fear, nervousness, and stress. Includes twists, forward bends, and meditation. Discussion and asana.

Prana is governed by the lungs and by respiration, particularly the inhalation. Learn to open the upper rib area, sternum, and collarbones to improve elasticity of the lungs. We'll focus on releasing restriction in the diaphragm and refining the movement of the breath. Includes backbends, inversions, meditation, and pranayama. Discussion and asana.

Udana is the upward rising breath located primarily in the throat and head. This class works with the throat chakra, addressing the tension that often resides around the neck, jaw, and tongue. Includes inversions, supported forward bends and backbends, meditation, and chanting. Discussion and asana.

Vyana is the "wind" that governs circulation throughout the body, building meditative awareness and deep rest. Learn how the blood and lymph circulate throughout the body and diffuse through all the bodily cells. Includes standing poses, supported poses, Savasana, and meditation. Discussion and asana.

Come investigate the clear nature of mind. We'll activate wakefulness not only in asana but also in standing, walking, sitting, and lying down. The aim of our practice is to see into the "original brightness" of our awareness in the midst of everyday events, rather than experiencing it as a static, isolated event had only on the meditation cushion or in asana. Excerpts from various Zen sources will be included. Discussion and asana.

The spiral pattern is seen in some of the most ancient forms of life. Investigate the coil that is the source of all movement. We'll practice revolving poses that activate spiral movement within the spine and tap the profound ways that twisting poses bring life, creativity, joy, and energy to the body. The throat is a common receptacle for physical, emotional, and psychic strain. We'll learn to free restriction in the throat by practicing postures that irrigate blood and lymph into the neck region. We'll also chant and create sound vibration in order to heal and purify the throat chakra. Discussion and asana.

It's common for the shoulders to displace forward, resulting in pain in the neck, tension between the shoulder blades, and numbness in the arms and hands. We'll review the primary strain patterns in the shoulder girdle and practice postures that help set the shoulders efficiently on the spine. Bring a block , strap, and blanket. Discussion and asana.
