What we call "stress" is often what Ayurveda calls "vata derangement," which can result in anxiety, insomnia, restlessness, and constipation. We'll do a grounding asana practice, pranayama, chanting, and meditation, and discuss Ayurvedic lifestyle techniques for calming vata and keeping stress at bay. No prior knowledge of Ayurveda is necessary. Bring two blankets, a strap, and an eye bag. Lecture, discussion, asana.

Yoga offers a holistic, multifaceted approach to preventing osteoporosis and the potentially life-threatening fractures that often result. We'll do a strong practice designed to prevent osteoporotic fractures and use that as a springboard to discuss the science of yoga and a holistic approach to healthy aging. Carpal tunnel syndrome is a potentially painful nerve condition that is sometimes mistaken for thoracic outlet syndrome. We'll review the causative factors for both conditions, cover treatment options, and introduce a yogic perspective on ergonomics. Bring an eight-foot strap. Lecture, discussion, asana, and pranayama.

Yoga includes a wide variety of tools to help heal psychological and emotional problems. In this workshop, we'll explore using asana, breathing practices, chanting, meditation, and ideas from yogic philosophy in the treatment of anxiety and depression. We'll review the science involved, including yoga's effects on the nervous system, neurotransmitters like serotonin, and the stress hormone cortisol. We'll also discuss how to integrate yoga into a broader holistic framework, including ideas from Ayurveda and other therapeutic approaches, both alternative and conventional. Bring a block and two to three blankets.

Recent evidence links stress to heart attack, diabetes, and breast cancer. We'll discuss the science behind stress-related disease and yoga's proven ability to fight it. We'll also review the effects of various yogic practices on the autonomic nervous system and on stress hormones, and try out a few simple breathing techniques. Lecture, discussion, and some practice. Then we'll talk about what isn't known, the limitations of science in investigating yoga, and how to make health care decisions in the absence of good scientific data.
