Dr. Joseph Signorile
Dr. Joseph Signorile is a professor of exercise physiology at the University of Miami and director of the Laboratory of Neuromuscular Research and Active Aging. He also holds a joint appointment at the University of Miami Miller School of Medicine’s Center on Aging. He has been involved in research using exercise to address independence and functional performance for over 25 years. Within the context of prescriptive exercise, he and his graduate students have been working with Kiersten Mooney and her colleagues at Bala Vinyasa Yoga to develop targeted training programs for elderly people at risk of injury from falling and patients of Parkinson’s disease. Additionally, their breakthrough work using electromyography to assess muscle utilization patterns during specific asanas has provided important information on targeting core musculature and has revealed differences among yoga practitioners at different skill levels that can be used in cuing and class design.
