Deborah Burkman has been teaching yoga since 2000. While her largest influence came from the teachings of the late Sri K. Pattabhi Jois, she has integrated what she has learned from numerous other teachers. Deborah presently teaches public classes in San Francisco, privately teaches the staff of Yoga Journal and Twitter, and teaches retreats around the world. She has been featured in Yoga Journal, 7x7 magazine, the San Francisco Bay Guardian, SF Weekly, and San Francisco magazine. Basics / Mixed Levels
This informative class will put asana in context within the larger goals of yoga. We'll start with a short lecture on Patanjali's definition of yoga, and the results of practicing. The rest of the class will be asana, focusing on Ujjayi breathing, bandha, drishti, and an-in depth study of all parts of the Sun Salutations, both A and B, including transitions and how to modify for specific body types, skill level, flexibility, and strength.
Mostly asana with a short lecture.
In-Depth Focus on Hip Opening

Move your hips through their full range of motion in order to help free your back from compression. First, we'll experience a series of postures that target the hips using props and gravity to increase your range of motion. Then we'll move through Sun Salutations, a series of standing postures, backbends, and forward folds, paying close attention to how the targeted hip openers have helped with our range of motion, strength, and stability.
What to bring: A block and strap.
