Medicine in the 21st century and beyond is not just about prescribing pills and performing procedures. Now more than ever, medical experts and consumers are combining traditional medicine with complementary medicine and focusing more on wellness and health, rather than just treating disease reactively. In this program, Dr. Bijoy Khandheria, Mayo Clinic cardiologist and lifelong yogi, will discuss how one can blend traditional and complementary approaches to maximize the prevention of disease and illness, and enhance the quality of life and health.

Fast-forward living can be exhilarating. But while some stress is healthy, excess stress can negatively impact the body-mind. We'll take the time to consciously slow down with breathing exercises and relaxation poses. Then, we'll practice slow flow sequences designed to revitalize the body-mind and instill awareness that you can carry into daily life. Lecture and asana.

The lymphatic system is part of an intricate web whose filaments reach deep into the nervous system and emotional body. Flushing the lymph boosts the immune system, calms the brain, improves sleep, and builds resistance to negative emotions. In this class on kinesiology—the study of how the body moves—we'll focus on the relationship between the shoulder joint and the scapula. We'll start with a review of their anatomy. Then we'll look at how their movement patterns and alignment in poses can help keep the joint healthy—or contribute to injuries and pain. Lecture and asana.

Matthew Sanford is a pioneer both in adapting yoga for people living with disabilities and in advocating for a mind-body approach to our medical and rehabilitation practices. He will use his unique perspective as a paraplegic and an Iyengar Yoga practitioner to give participants basic guidelines for adapting yoga and applying yogic insights to transform the delivery of health care. Yoga includes a wide variety of tools to help heal psychological and emotional problems. Come explore how asana, breathing practices, and chanting can help treat anxiety, depression, anger, and feelings of emptiness; we'll also discuss how to integrate yoga into a broader holistic framework.
