The beauty of yoga is that it does not discriminate – it can travel though any body.  Matthew Sanford draws upon his unique experience as a paraplegic for twenty-eight years and an Iyengar Yoga practitioner for the last sixteen to give participants an “inside” glimpse into adapting yoga for people living with disabilities.  Matthew is also heading up a groundbreaking project to transform the Courage Center into the world’s leading holistic rehabilitation center. In this intensive, participants will explore not only how to adapt yoga, but also how yogic insights can infuse our medical and rehabilitation practices.  Asana and discussion. Appropriate for yoga teachers and anyone interested in learning more about teaching people living with disabilities.

Push beyond your boundaries and explore the world at the edge of gravity as you experience the beautiful realm of "vertical yoga." We'll start with a morning asana practice; then we'll relocate to a nearby cliff for a day of rock climbing. As dusk approaches, we'll finish with a short session of introspective yoga and meditation outdoors. No experience is necessary, although you should be in good general health. All equipment will be provided. Be prepared for various weather conditions. A must sign a release of liability waiver.

The Architecture of Sitting

Using a sequence of all types of asanas, we will build an integrated seat for meditation. Discover and explore the fundamental principles of full lotus, simple cross-legged pose, hero's pose, cobbler's pose, and sage pose. Begin to feel how a good sitting posture leads to ease of breath and therefore steadiness of mind. We will practice a variety of poses to align the spine and open the hips, including standing poses, backbends, and hip openers as well as practice pranayama, and seated meditation. There will also be time for questions and answers. All levels.
