Yoga can be a challenge when recovering from a disk injury in the lower back. We'll learn the anatomy of the injury and a wide selection of modified postures to provide recovering students a satisfying and potentially therapeutic asana practice. Most of the asanas in the class aren't appropriate for acute or severe injuries. Bring several blankets, a strap, and a block. We'll learn to see when a student's pose could benefit from adjustments—and then learn how to make those adjustments safely and effectively using words, visual guidance, hands, or props. Learn how to use stretch reflexes and other principles of physiology to safely and efficiently increase muscle length and strength. We'll alternate between physiological explanation and active practice, progressing from the molecular structure of muscles to complex control of movement by the brain.
