Off the Mat Into the World presents
Beyond Studio Walls: Bringing Yoga to At-Risk Youth and Adults

Instructors: Seane Corn, Hala Khouri, Suzanne Sterling, and special guest teachers
Friday, January 16
8:00am-5:00pm: All-Day Collaborative Intensives
Code: AIOMIW

Explore how yoga helps us navigate through our own wounding, and how it can support us to serve others more authentically. The morning starts with an asana class led by Seane Corn, followed by an Off the Mat workshop designed to show you why you want to serve others through yoga and how you can do so. The afternoon session is a collaboration of several teachers who specialize in working with at-risk populations, trauma, juvenile halls, homeless youth, addiction, sexual abuse, and exploitation. Through discussion, journaling, group exercises, asana, meditation, and ritual, we'll explore the challenges and the joys of serving at-risk populations; the things teachers need to do to be effective; and certain internal dynamics like personal wounding, burnout, triggering, projection, and caretaking. This class is designed for those people interested in working with addiction, at-risk and homeless youth and adults, trauma, and abuse, and for those needing support for the work they are already doing.

The UZ Foundation is dedicated to creating a new category of health care practitioner, the Urban Zen Integrative Therapist (www.urbanzen.org ).  Urban Zen Integrative Therapists will integrate invaluable yoga techniques and teach complementary health care practices that aid in caring for patients in multiple clinical and health care settings. During this day-long intensive, we will explore specific techniques in asana, pranayama, and meditation that address common symptoms of pain, anxiety, nausea, insomnia, confusion, constipation (PANIC), and fatigue.  The day will also include special presentations by aromatherapy experts on how aromatherapy can help to reduce symptoms and enhance patients’ healing.  While these techniques are ideal for patients in the medical setting, they are also completely appropriate in the yoga classroom and in everyday life.  Presenters include Rodney Yee, Colleen Saidman, Richard Freeman, Richard Rosen, Aromatherapy experts from Young Living Oils, and Urban Zen faculty Jamie Naughright and Ed Dailey.  The day will include meditation, pranayama, asana, lecture, discussion, clinical practice, and take home techniques.
